Beautiful late 18th Century temple 'ranma' in the form of a 'shishi' (lion dog) carved with strong, masterful strokes revealing twists of fur, flailing mane and powerful claws. The eyes are made of glass with the pupil painted and gilded on the interior, cotton wadding has been inserted behind the glass to provide the whites of the eyes. This superb carving would have been mounted over a large gate or door and stare down at visitors as they entered the temple.
